I bought this book because I thought it would be another wonderful book by Dr. Bob Schwartz and an associate. However, after first saying that he agreed with Dr. Bob, this author went off on another tangent completely. He talks about a series of sentences that one can repeat to one’s self daily, either by writing them, reading them or on tape. However, he says that taping them yourself is not recommended and that the most effective way is to buy his tapes. He continues to discuss his tapes throughout the second half of the book. Come on, this won’t work unless we spend more money? I don’t think so. A waste of money on the book was enough.

I’ve only recently read the book but the information is astounding. It really sounds so simple, though making changes will take time. That’s another reason for my email. Has anyone been able to locate the audio tapes he references in the book? I cannot find them and am very interested in purchasing them. Thanks for any assistance anyone is able to offer.

I believe Self-Talk works (I have used it with success from time to time); but I definately have a problem with Helmstetter’s credibility. . . After enthusiastically devouring THIS book, I went on to “collect” and read Dr. Helmstetter’s previous books on self-talk. Imagine my dismay at learning that the original published version of how “in ten and one-half weeks” he personally “lost fifty-eight pounds shaving and listening to (his) cassettes” makes no mention of professionally prepared tapes (as touted in THIS book)! Indeed he specifically states that he simply took all the affirmations he had written on cards, stacked them up, and read them into a tape recorder!!! Yes, I understand new research MAY HAVE actually revealed professional tapes are optimal, but after reading the original account and then comparing it to this latest, totally different account where he “first tried recording the Self-Talk (him)self, in (his) own voice, but eventually. . . took all of the Self-Talk to a professional recording studio and told the engineer (he) wanted to have it all recorded in a professional voice–not (his) own,” so that when he “finally got the professionally recorded tapes and set a day to begin,” he could spend ten and a half weeks losing “fifty-eight pounds–shaving–and listening to Self-Talk on tapes!”. . . Give me a break!!! He has blatantly twisted his story in a shameless attempt to benefit from the sales of his mass-produced cassettes!!! If I listened to his tapes now, I would pile on more pounds out of sheer rebellion!!! One can easily obtain the information they need to learn about self-talk technique and scripting from Douglas Bloch’s “Positive Self-Talk for Children. ” Bloch’s book also benefits from a succinctness that Helmstetter’s lacks (was he being paid by the word?). It’s too bad that such valuable information has been twisted, tainted, and diluted!

  4. I have worked as a therapist for thirty years with many credits to my work including total relief from anorexia and other so called incurables for my clients. This book in the proper hands is of the highest value.

This book will work if you allow it to. You must listen to what the author has to say on the pages. Don’t let the other reviews discourage you. If you have been dealing with a weight problem I am sure you have tried many ways to loose the weight, and possibly alot of money in the process, I know I have. Come on people, this book is only a few bucks! And I say that it is worth its “weight” in gold, pun intended!
