I purchased this book recently because I am in the early stages of my own personal journey with bariatric surgery. I am truly fortunate to live in Reno, and have Dr. Sasse as my surgeon. After reading this comprehensive overview of all of the current options and choices available to those who are considering bariatric surgery, I am confident in my choice of procedures, and certain that I have made the best choice possible in physicians. The writing, although full of technical terms and research statistics, is a clear, non-biased read. I highly recommend this guide to anyone considering weight-loss surgery. After reading Dr. Sasse’s book, you will know what to expect, what questions to ask, and whether or not this type of surgery is the right choice for you.

  3. One of the newest weight-loss surgery books on the market is Outpatient Weight-Loss Surgery by Dr. Kent Sasse. With weight-loss surgery (WLS) becoming more and more common, many people who might never have considered it in the past are beginning to explore their options. Therefore, having a wealth of information available to all who may be interested is important.

Dr. Sasse has written an informative and fairly thorough book explaining the process for getting WLS, starting with how to evaluate whether or not you are a good candidate and going all the way through to what problems to be aware of after the surgery is complete. There is even a specific section on the WLS options offered in Mexico and what to think carefully about before deciding to have it done there.

There is a lot of good data, and it all appears to be current research. I know for myself, the thought of having WLS on an outpatient basis was not something I was familiar with. Of course, anyone interested in the possibility of having this surgery on an outpatient basis will need to research whether it is available in their area and, more importantly, whether or not their insurance will cover it.

The only issue I had with the book may be a minor one for others, but it often felt like I was reading an expanded version of an advertising brochure for Dr. Sasse’s company. His company iMetabolic (International Bariatric Institute) is mentioned frequently in the book – frequently enough that it was somewhat off-putting. I’m not a huge fan of advertising one’s own company within a book unless the book is specifically about that company. However, while this is a huge gripe for me, it may be less so for others, and it certainly shouldn’t be the deciding factor with regards to how helpful the book may be for you.

Overall, it is easy to read, clear and gives some great information for anyone considering Weight Loss Surgery (or for anyone with a loved one who may benefit). It is certainly worth taking the time to read, and for anyone who lives in an area where outpatient WLS is an option, then this book may help you tremendously!

  4. Dr. Sasse has written a valuable book at an important time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that more than a third of American adults are obsese and are consequently at risk for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, Type II diabetes and other health issues. Too often traditional weight loss programs do not work, and until recent years surgical interventions were risky, complicated and with uncertain results. That has changed. Possible now are minimally invasive and highly effective surgeries on an outpatient basis. Dr. Sasse explains the three types of new surgeries, each done laparoscopically (that is, with a camera system); what to expect from each, and how to choose the right doctor. His book is comprehensive, informative and detailed, always clear and unfailingly respectful of the reader. Included, too, are a very useful list of resources, a helpful glossary, even recipes. For anyone considering one of these bariatric surgeries, Dr. Sasse’s book would be of great use.

Dr. Sasse provides insight and innovation into the world of weight loss surgery. If you are considering undergoing bariatric surgery, make this your ‘Must Read” book! You will have the tools to make an informed decision and will know the steps for a long and healthy life after surgery. This book is ideal for not only patients seeking surgery, but their family members as well so that they are informed participants in the process. Thank you Dr. Sasse for providing this information in a book that is not only educational, but enjoyable.
