I enjoyed the first book about essential eating (Essential Eating: A Cookbook: Discover How to Eat, Not Diet) and had been looking forward to reading more about this healing approach to eating from Ms Quinn but I was disappointed to find a book with less explanation of the basis for the diet. I knew there were fewer recipes (150 compared with 350) but I didn’t realize that many of them would be identical to the first book (and I’m not sure that you can call an entry for water or herbal tea a “recipe” anyway).

Still, I give the book 3 stars because I do think it presents an effective, healthy, healing, and ethical way to eat and may provide an accessible starting place for someone new to “real food” and sprouted grains, but, the first book is far better.

  3. It was a year in May 2009 that I began following the Essential Eating Philosophy. In that time I have taken off 40 pounds and kept it off. The food that we eat is delicious and very satisfying. I have all Janie’s books and her philosophy is simple and easy to follow. My family enjoys what I cook. We rarely go out to eat because the food we have at home is tastier & healthier. Last year I was diagnosed with exhausted adrenals-I was always tired, my hair was falling out, I had indigestion and related problems, my nails were ridged and brittle, headaches were the norm, dry skin drove me nuts and I was continually hungry. I had followed a low fat diet (doctor directed) since the birth of my second son (1988)and could not understand why I was having these problems. As a last resort I decided to try Essential Eating. I could use real butter, eggs, yogurt, sprouted bread, and maple syrup to name a few. No diet food!! My adrenals have come a long way & all of my problems have either disappeared or are greatly improved. I feel better every day. It was not a quick cure-all but I felt improvements after about the second week. At first I felt stange cooking with real foods and not using artificial foods. We made changes a little at a time and we are so glad we did. I consider my kitchen an Essential Eating kitchen and by following Janie’s philosophy of the continous kitchen, food is not wasted and our food budget is lower now than it was a year ago. Janie also provides a “Recommeded Related Reading” list which is just as life-changing as her philosophy. Janie, I do not how to thank you but I am proud to be an Essential Eating Path Whacker.

    Dear Food Lover,
You are correct, Essential Eating The Digestible Diet is a more simple approach to getting more real, digestible foods into your diet. Eight years after writing Essential Eating A Cookbook, and traveling the country sharing this message, I realized that we needed a more streamlined version of this healthy, common-sense eating lifestyle. I promote drinking clean water and herbal tea, but there are no “recipes” for such. The couple of crossover recipes are basic to Essential Eating and needed to be included in both books.

The newer Essential Eating The Digestible Diet is a much easier message to grasp for weight loss and restored health – at a lower price point. It offers a simple eating lifestyle with real food that the body can easily digest for health and well being. Sound simple? It is. Thank you for your insights and my very best,
    Author, Janie Quinn
